| systemic lupus erythematosus |
one of the connective tissue diseases, commonly called lupus. 'Systemic' - affecting many organs of the body; 'lupus' - affecting the skin by producing a rash on the face, hence the use of the term lupus which is latin for wolf; 'erythematosus' - simply means red, because in lupus, rashes are very common. Lupus is a rheumatic disease which is characterised by abnormalities of the immune system (which normally protects the body against infection).
