african sleeping sickness <infectious disease> A disease affecting humans and other mammals in central Africa that is caused by the parasitic protozoans Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and is transmitted by the tsetse fly.
Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, vomiting, pain in the extremities, lymph gland enlargement, anaemia, depression, fatigue, coma, and eventually death if left untreated. The trypanosome is able to evade the host's immune system by frequently changing the proteins on its outer surface, by which the immune system identifies intruders.

african swine fever virus The lone species of the genus african swine fever-like viruses. The virus causes a fatal disease among domestic pigs in africa and a less virulent infection in europe. Originally listed as a species of iridoviridae, the virus exhibits some similarities to poxviridae but its differences warranted placement in a separate genus of an, as yet unknown, family.

chronic African sleeping sickness A chronic disease of humans caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense in northern and sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal east to Sudan and Uganda; characterised by splenomegaly, drowsiness, an uncontrollable urge to sleep, and the development of psychotic changes; basal ganglia and cerebellar involvement commonly lead to chorea and athetosis; the terminal phase of the disease is characterised by wasting, anorexia, and emaciation that gradually leads to coma and death, usually from intercurrent infection.
