  • Sympathetic Fibers, Postganglionic - »õâ Nerve fibers which project from sympathetic ganglia to synapses on target organs. Sympathetic postganglionic fibers use norepinephrine as transmitter, except for those innervating eccrine sweat glands (and possibly some blood vessels) which use acetylcholine. They may also release peptide cotransmitters.
Synonyms : Fiber, Postganglionic Sympathetic, Fibers, Postganglionic Sympathetic, Postganglionic Sympathetic Fiber, Postganglionic Sympathetic Fibers, Sympathetic Fiber, Postganglionic
  • Sympathetic Nervous System - »õâ The thoracolumbar division of the autonomic nervous system. Sympathetic preganglionic fibers originate in neurons of the intermediolateral column of the spinal cord and project to the paravertebral and prevertebral ganglia, which in turn project to target organs. The sympathetic nervous system mediates the body's response to stressful situations, i.e., the fight or flight reactions. It often acts reciprocally to the parasympathetic system.
Synonyms : Nervous System, Sympathetic, Nervous Systems, Sympathetic, Sympathetic Nervous Systems, System, Sympathetic Nervous, Systems, Sympathetic Nervous
  • Sympatholytics - »õâ Drugs that inhibit the actions of the sympathetic nervous system by any mechanism. The most common of these are the ADRENERGIC ANTAGONISTS and drugs that deplete norepinephrine or reduce the release of transmitters from adrenergic postganglionic terminals (see ADRENERGIC AGENTS). Drugs that act in the central nervous system to reduce sympathetic activity (e.g., centrally acting alpha-2 adrenergic agonists, see ADRENERGIC ALPHA-AGONISTS) are included here.
Synonyms : Sympatholytic Agents, Sympatholytic Drugs, Agents, Sympathetic-Blocking, Agents, Sympatholytic, Drugs, Sympatholytic, Sympathetic Blocking Agents
  • Sympathomimetics - »õâ Drugs that mimic the effects of stimulating postganglionic adrenergic sympathetic nerves. Included here are drugs that directly stimulate adrenergic receptors and drugs that act indirectly by provoking the release of adrenergic transmitters.
Synonyms : Sympathomimetic Agents, Sympathomimetic Drugs, Agents, Sympathomimetic, Drugs, Sympathomimetic, Sympathomimetic Amines
  • Symphoricarpos - »õâ A plant genus of the family CAPRIFOLIACEAE. The common name of "snowberry" is also used for GAULTHERIA.
    Synonyms : Symphoricarpus
