Reiter syndrome Features of this syndrome include inflammation of the joints, urinary tract, eyes and ulcerations of the skin and mouth. When a person develops Reiter syndrome through inflammation of the intestinal tract, it usually follows a bout of diarrhea caused by eating foods contaminated with bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter and Yersinia.

Reiter s. a symptom complex consisting of urethritis, conjunctivitis, and arthritis; not all symptoms are present in all patients, and there may also be mucocutaneous manifestations such as keratoderma blennorrhagicum, circinate balanitis, and stomatitis. It usually affects young men and runs a self-limited but relapsing course. Most affected patients have increased levels of the histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27. It may represent an abnormal immune response to infection, perhaps with a hereditary susceptibility. Epidemiologic studies reveal two types: a venereal or postvenereal type, possibly related to infection with Chlamydia or Ureaplasma; and a dysenteric or postdysenteric type, possibly related to Shigella, Salmonella, Yersinia, or Campylobacter fetus infection. Called also Fiessinger-Leroy-Reiter s.
