any of the types of cutaneous leishmaniasis occurring in Asia, Africa, or the Mediterranean basin; three separate types are distinguished according to the causative organism: dry or urban cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by Leishmania tropica; wet or rural cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by L. major; and Ethiopian cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by L. aethiopica. It has received many names, often according to the locality of its occurrence (see under boil).
