MVP A disease of the mitral valve that occurs in three to eight percent of the population and that may cause chest discomfort, palpitations, shortness of breath, weakness and, more rarely, stroke. In severe cases, valve leakage may be evident to the degree that surgical repair is indicated. Often patients with MVP require premedication with antibiotics before procedures such as dental work or surgery.
