| Leber's hereditary optic n. |
a rare hereditary disorder, resulting from a deficit of ATP caused by mutation of a mitochondrial gene involved in ATP manufacture and occurring most commonly in males, with onset usually at about age twenty; it is characterized by degeneration of the optic nerve and papillomacular bundle, resulting in a progressive loss of central vision that may remit spontaneously. Called also hereditary optic n. or atrophy, Leber's optic atrophy, and Leber's disease.
