Synonym: ps2 integrin
(05 Dec 1998)
integrins Superfamily of cell surface proteins that are involved in binding to extracellular matrix components in some cases. most are heterodimeric with a _ subunit of 95 kD that is conserved through the superfamily and a more variable _ subunit of 150-170 kD. The first examples described were fibronectin and vitronectin receptors of fibroblasts, which bind to an RGD (Arg Gly Asp) sequence in the ligand protein, though the context of the RGD seems important and there is also a divalent cation dependence. Subsequently the platelet IIb/IIIa surface glycoprotein (fibronectin and fibrinogen receptor) and the LFA 1 class of leucocyte surface protein were recognised as integrins, together with the VLA surface protein. The requirement for the RGD sequence in the ligand does not seem to be invariable.
(18 Nov 1997)
integrity 1. Quality of being honest and morally upright, 2. Condition of being whole or undivided (a nation's integrity, the integrity of the patient).
(18 Nov 1997)
integropallial <zoology> Having the pallial line entire, or without a sinus, as certain bivalve shells.

  • Integrin alpha1 - »õâ An integrin alpha subunit that binds COLLAGEN and LAMININ though its I domain. It combines with INTEGRIN BETA1 to form the heterodimer INTEGRIN ALPHA1BETA1.
    Synonyms : CD49a Antigen, Integrin alpha(1), VLA-1 alpha Subunit, alpha1 Integrin, Antigen, CD49a, Integrin, alpha1, VLA 1 alpha Subunit, alpha Subunit, VLA-1
  • Integrin alpha1beta1 - »õâ Integrin alpha1beta1 functions as a receptor for LAMININ and COLLAGEN. It is widely expressed during development, but in the adult is the predominant laminin receptor (RECEPTORS, LAMININ) in mature SMOOTH MUSCLE CELLS, where it is important for maintenance of the differentiated phenotype of these cells. Integrin alpha1beta1 is also found in LYMPHOCYTES and microvascular endothelial cells, and may play a role in angiogenesis. In SCHWANN CELLS and neural crest cells, it is involved in cell migration. Integrin alpha1beta1 is also known as VLA-1 and CD49a-CD29.
    Synonyms : CD49a-CD29, Integrin alpha(1)beta(1), VLA-1, alpha1beta1 Integrin, Integrin, alpha1beta1, alpha1beta1, Integrin
  • Integrin alpha2 - »õâ An integrin alpha subunit that primarily combines with INTEGRIN BETA1 to form the INTEGRIN ALPHA2BETA1 heterodimer. It contains a domain which has homology to collagen-binding domains found in von Willebrand factor.
Synonyms : CD49b Antigen, GPIa, Platelet Glycoprotein Ia, VLA-2 alpha Chain, alpha2 Integrin, Antigen, CD49b, Chain, VLA-2 alpha, Glycoprotein Ia, Platelet, Integrin, alpha2, VLA 2 alpha Chain, alpha Chain, VLA-2, alpha2, Integrin
  • Integrin alpha2beta1 - »õâ An integrin found on fibroblasts, platelets, endothelial and epithelial cells, and lymphocytes where it functions as a receptor for COLLAGEN and LAMININ. Although originally referred to as the collagen receptor, it is one of several receptors for collagen. Ligand binding to integrin alpha2beta1 triggers a cascade of intracellular signaling, including activation of p38 MAP kinase.
Synonyms : CD49b-CD29, Glycoprotein Ia-IIa, Platelet Membrane Glycoprotein Heterodimer Ia-IIa, VLA-2, Very Late Antigen-2, alpha2beta1Integrin, CD49b CD29, Glycoprotein Ia IIa, Late Antigen-2, Very, Platelet Membrane Glycoprotein Heterodimer Ia IIa, VLA 2
  • Integrin alpha3 - »õâ An integrin alpha subunit that occurs as alternatively spliced isoforms. The isoforms are differentially expressed in specific cell types and at specific developmental stages. Integrin alpha3 combines with INTEGRIN BETA1 to form INTEGRIN ALPHA3BETA1 which is a heterodimer found primarily in epithelial cells.
    Synonyms : CD49c Antigen, FRP-2, Fusion Regulatory Protein-2, alpha(3) Integrin, Antigen, CD49c, Fusion Regulatory Protein 2, alpha3, Integrin

integrase A little-understood enzyme that plays a vital role in the HIV-infection process. Integrase inserts HIV's genes into a cell's normal DNA. It operates after reverse transcriptase has created a DNA version of the RNA form of HIV genes present in virus particles. Substances that inhibit integrase are being studied in HIV-positive patients.
