| Holter monitor |
A recording device, the size of a small pocketbook, usually worn on an outpatient basis, that records on a tape all the heart beats of a person over a given period of time, usually twenty-four to forty-eight hours. This device enables a doctor to study an individual's heart rate, note whether rapid irregular beating occurs (which may require drug therapy), or see if the heart rate slows to particularly low levels (which may require pacemaker placement).
