1. abrupt intermittent oscillation of the iris under the influence of light; seen in certain stages of tabes dorsalis. 2. a sign of pseudohypertrophic muscular dystrophy; to stand from the supine position, the patient rolls to the prone position, kneels, and pushes up to a standing position with hands against shins, knees, and thighs. Called also Gowers' maneuver or phenomenon.
