| glycine-succinate cycle | A series of metabolic steps in which glycine is condensed with succinyl-CoA and is then oxidised to CO2 and H2O with regeneration of the succinyl-CoA; important in the synthesis of d-aminolevulinic acid and in the metabolism of red blood cells. Synonym: Shemin cycle. (05 Mar 2000) |

| glycine amidinotransferase |
[EC 2.1.4.1] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the transfer of an amidino group from arginine to glycine to form guanidinoacetate and ornithine. The reaction is a step in the synthesis of creatine.

| glycine cleavage s. |
a group of four mitochondrial enzymes, designated P, H, T, and L, that together catalyze the conversion of glycine to CO2 and a one-carbon unit that can be transferred to tetrahydrofolate. Deficiency of one or more of the proteins, an autosomal recessive trait, results in nonketotic hyperglycinemia.

| glycine hydroxymethyltransferase |
[EC 2.1.2.1] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the reversible transfer of a methylene group from serine to tetrahydrofolate to form 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate and glycine. The enzyme is a pyridoxal phosphate protein. The reaction occurs in mitochondria and is a major source of one-carbon units for folate-mediated transfer reactions. Called also serine hydroxymethyltransferase.
