glucose-6-phosphate <biochemistry> Glucose 6-phosphate is a phosphomonoester of glucose that is formed by transfer of phosphate from ATP, catalysed by the enzyme hexokinase.
It is an intermediate both of the glycolytic pathway (next converted to fructose 6 phosphate) and of the NADPH generating pentose phosphate pathway, formed from glucose via hexokinase. However it is not strictly a glycolytic intermediate and it is readily converted to glycogen or oxidized to NADPH.

test, glucose tolerance After fasting, a specific amount (100 grams) of glucose is given by mouth, and the blood levels of this sugar are measured every hour. Normally, the blood glucose should return to normal within 2 to 2 1/2 hours. The gtt is considered a classic test of carbohydrate metabolism. It is much used in the diagnosis of diabetes. The gtt depends on a number of factors including the ability of the intestine to absorb glucose, the power of the liver to take up and store glucose, the capacity of the pancreas to produce insulin, and the amount of active insulin.

fasting blood glucose <endocrinology, investigation> A method for finding out how much glucose (sugar) is in the blood. The test can show if a person has diabetes.
A blood sample is taken in a lab or doctor's office. The test is usually done in the morning before the person has eaten. The normal, nondiabetic range for blood glucose is from 70 to 110 mg/dl, depending on the type of blood being tested. If the level is over 140 mg/dl, it usually means the person has diabetes (except for newborns and some pregnant women).
