follicular cancer of the thyroid <oncology, tumour> A cancer of the thyroid gland that occurs with increased frequency in those who have had radiation exposure to the neck. Other risk factors include a family history of thyroid disease and history for goitre. Follicular carcinoma constitutes about 30% of all thyroid cancers. It has a greater rate of recurrence and metastasis than that of papillary carcinoma (the most common form of thyroid cancer).
Symptoms include enlargement of the thyroid gland or neck swelling, change in voice, cough (occasionally bloody) and diarrhoea.
(12 Nov 1997)
follicular carcinomas Carcinoma's of the thyroid composed of well or poorly differentiated epithelial follicles without papillary formation, which are difficult to distinguish from adenomas; the criteria include blood vessel invasion and the finding of metastases of follicular thyroid tissue in other structures such as cervical lymph nodes and bone; follicular carcinoma's may take up radioactive iodine.
(05 Mar 2000)
follicular conjunctivitis <ophthalmology> Conjunctivitis associated with hypertrophic lymphoid tissue in the conjunctival fornices.
(05 Mar 2000)
follicular cyst <physiology> Cyst due to the occlusion of the duct of a follicle or small gland.
(12 Dec 1998)
follicular cystitis <urology> Chronic cystitis characterised by small mucosal nodules due to lymphocytic infiltration.
(05 Mar 2000)
follicular dendritic cell <pathology> A virus-trapping dendritic cell found in lymph node follicles (germinal centres).
See: Germinal Centre and Dendritic Cell.
(09 Oct 1997)
follicular epithelial cell <physiology> A cell lining a follicle such as that of the thyroid gland.
(05 Mar 2000)
follicular fluid <physiology> A fluid consisting of sex steroid hormones, plasma proteins, mucopolysaccharides, and electrolytes that is present in the vesicular ovarian follicle (graafian follicle) surrounding the ovum.
(12 Dec 1998)
follicular gland <anatomy> A gland consisting of follicles.
(05 Mar 2000)
follicular goiter A form of goiter in which there is a great increase in the follicles with proliferation of the epithelium.
Synonym: follicular goiter.
(05 Mar 2000)
follicular hormone estrone
follicular impetigo <dermatology> A superficial follicular pustular eruption involving the scalp or other hairy area.
Synonym: Bockhart's impetigo, superficial pustular perifolliculitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
follicular iritis <ophthalmology> Rarely used term for chronic iritis with glassy nodules situated deep down between the anterior and posterior layers of the iris.
(05 Mar 2000)
follicular lymphoma <tumour> A malignant lymphoma arising from lymphoid follicular B-cells which may be small or large, growing in a nodular pattern.
Synonym: follicular lymphoma, giant follicular lymphoblastoma.
(05 Mar 2000)
follicular mange An infestation of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands with mites of the genus Demodex; they occur in humans and a number of domesticated animals; although asymptomatic in most species, these mites can cause severe and extensive dermatitis ("red mange") in dogs.
Synonym: demodectic acariasis, follicular mange.

  • Follicular Fluid - »õâ The fluid surrounding the OVUM and GRANULOSA CELLS in the Graafian follicle (OVARIAN FOLLICLE). The follicular fluid contains sex steroids, glycoprotein hormones, plasma proteins, mucopolysaccharides, and enzymes.
Synonyms : Antral Fluid, Ovarian Follicle, Liquor Folliculi, Fluid, Follicular, Follicular Fluids, Folliculi, Liquor
  • Follicular Phase - »õâ The period of the MENSTRUAL CYCLE representing follicular growth, increase in ovarian estrogen (ESTROGENS) production, and epithelial proliferation of the ENDOMETRIUM. Follicular phase begins with the onset of MENSTRUATION and ends with OVULATION.
Synonyms : Phase, Follicular, Phase, Menstrual Proliferative, Phase, Preovulatory, Proliferative Phase, Menstrual
  • Folliculitis - »õâ Inflammation of follicles, primarily hair follicles.
    Synonyms : Folliculitides, Sycoses
  • Follistatin - »õâ A broadly distributed protein that binds directly to ACTIVINS. It functions as an activin antagonist, inhibits FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE secretion, regulates CELL DIFFERENTIATION, and plays an important role in embryogenesis. Follistatin is a single glycosylated polypeptide chain of approximately 37-kDa and is not a member of the inhibin family (INHIBINS). Follistatin also binds and neutralizes many members of the TRANSFORMING GROWTH FACTOR BETA family.
    Synonyms : Activin Binding Protein
  • Follistatin-Related Proteins - »õâ Broadly distributed glycoproteins that are homologous to the activin-binding protein, FOLLISTATIN. These follistatin-related proteins are encoded by a number of genes.
Synonyms : FLRG Protein, FSTL1 Gene Product, FSTL3 Gene Product, Follistatin Secreted Related Protein, Follistatin-Like Protein 1, Follistatin-Like Protein 3, Follistatin-Like Secreted Glycoprotein, Follistatin-Related Protein 1, Follistatin Like Protein 1
