| 설명 | 신생아를 포함해 출생 후 1년까지의 어린이를 말하며 이 기간을 영아기라 부른다. 신체발육 및 운동기능의 발달이 매우 활발한 시기이다. 이 시기는 신생아 때부터 계속해서 환경에 적응해 가는 중요한 시기이다. 젖니가 나오며 면역기능의 활성화, 반사의 소실과 수의운동의 발달, 감각(시각, 청각, 촉각) 기능의 발달, 체중과 키의 증가를 확인할 수 있다. 체중은 3개월에 2배, 1년엔 3배가 되며, 키는 1년에 약 27cm 자란다. |

| 설명 | 한 살 이하의 건강한 아기가 아무런 조짐이나 원인 없이 갑자기 사망했을 경우에 내리는 진단이다. 이 증후군은 생후 1~4개월 사이에 가장 많이 발생하며, 대부분 밤 10시에서 오전 10시 사이에 발생한다. 조산하거나 부모가 흡연자일 경우, 20세 이하 산모의 초산, 임신전 건강관리에 소홀한 산모에게서 태어난 영아에게서 많이 발생한다. 이 증후군으로 사망한 영아의 형제일 경우 일반적인 영아보다 걸릴 확률이 높은 것으로 알려져 있다. |

| infant colic | A syndrome in early infancy characterised by episodic loud crying, apparent abdominal pain (legs drawn up and rigid abdomen) and irritability. Factors include swallowing air during feedings, overfeeding, parental anxiety and cow's milk allergy.
