a method for measuring cardiac output based on the Fick principle applied to pulmonary blood flow: the rate of oxygen consumption by the lungs, when divided by the arteriovenous oxygen difference (the difference in oxygen concentration between the arterial and venous systems), gives the rate of blood flow across the pulmonary capillaries and the cardiac output. a restatement of the law of conservation of mass used in making indirect measurements: the amount of a substance taken up or released by an organ is the product of the blood flow to the organ and the concentration difference of the substance between the arterial and venous systems. It is usually applied as the Fick method (q.v.) or one of the indicator dilution methods (q.v.) to determine cardiac output.
