set (psychology) Readiness to think or respond in a predetermined way when confronted with a problem or stimulus situation.

set-up 1. The arrangement of teeth on a trial denture base.
2. A procedure in dental case analysis involving cutting off and repositioning of teeth in the desired positions on a plaster cast.

ear, low-set A minor anomaly involving an ear situated down below its normal location. Technically, the ear is low-set when the helix (of the ear) meets the cranium at a level below that of a horizontal plane through both inner canthi (the inside corners of the eyes). The presence of 2 or more minor anomalies in a child increases the probability that the child has a major malformation.
(12 Dec 1998)
first-set rejection Allograft transplantation between two organisms not previously sensitised to the graft tissue. Necrosis of the graft usually occurs within 10 days of transplantation.
(05 Mar 2000)
learning set A readiness or predisposition to learn developed from previous learning experiences, as when an organism learns to solve each successive problem (of equal or increasing difficulty) in fewer trials.
(05 Mar 2000)
low-set ear An ear positionned below its normal location. Classified as a minor anomaly. Technically, the ear is low-set when the helix (of the ear) meets the cranium at a level below that of a horizontal plane through both inner canthi (the inside corners of the eyes). The presence of 2 or more minor anomalies in a child increases the probability that the child has a major malformation.

Abbott's tube A tube with two lumens, one ending in a small collapsible balloon and the other in a metallic tip with numerous perforations; used for intestinal decompression.
Synonym: Abbott's tube.
(05 Mar 2000)
abdominal ostium of uterine tube The fimbriated or ovarian extremity of an oviduct.
Synonym: ostium abdominale tubae uterinae.
(05 Mar 2000)
air cells of auditory tube Occasional small air cells in the inferior wall of the auditory tube, near the tympanic orifice, communicating with the tympanic cavity.
Synonym: cellulae pneumaticae tubae auditivae, air cells of auditory tube.
(05 Mar 2000)
air tube The trachea, or a bronchus or any of its branches conveying air to the lungs.
(05 Mar 2000)
alar lamina of neural tube The dorsal division of the lateral walls of the neural tube in the embryo; it gives rise to neurons relaying afferent impulses to higher centres; in the adult such neurons compose the sensory nuclei of the spinal cord and brainstem.
Synonym: lamina alaris, alar plate of neural tube, dorsolateral plate of neural tube, lamina dorsalis, wing plate.
(05 Mar 2000)
alar plate of neural tube The dorsal division of the lateral walls of the neural tube in the embryo; it gives rise to neurons relaying afferent impulses to higher centres; in the adult such neurons compose the sensory nuclei of the spinal cord and brainstem.
Synonym: lamina alaris, alar plate of neural tube, dorsolateral plate of neural tube, lamina dorsalis, wing plate.
(05 Mar 2000)
ampulla of uterine tube The wide portion of the uterine (fallopian) tube near the fimbriated extremity; it has a complexly folded mucosa with a columnar epithelium of mostly ciliated cells between which are secretory cells.
Synonym: ampulla tubae uterinae.
(05 Mar 2000)
ampullary folds of uterine tube One of the folds of mucous membrane at the fimbriated extremity of the uterine tube.
Synonym: plicae ampullares tubae uterinae.
(05 Mar 2000)
auditory tube A tube leading from the tympanic cavity to the nasopharynx; it consists of an osseous (posterolateral) portion at the tympanic end, and a fibrocartilaginous (anteromedial) portion at the pharyngeal end; where the two portions join, in the region of the sphenopetrosal fissure, is the narrowest portion of the tube (isthmus); the auditory tube enables equalization of pressure within the tympanic cavity with ambient air pressure, referred to commonly as "popping of the ears".
Synonym: tuba auditiva, tuba auditoria, eustachian tube, guttural duct, otopharyngeal tube, otosalpinx, pharyngotympanic tube, salpinx, tuba acustica, tuba eustachiana, tuba eustachii.
