the conditions which exist at equilibrium when two solutions are separated by a membrane permeable to some but not all of the ions of the solutions. There is a complex distribution of the ions between the two solutions, an electrical potential develops between the two sides of the membrane, and the two solutions vary in osmotic pressure. Called also Gibbs-Donnan e.
