C3b |
a constituent of the classical pathway C5 convertase and of the alternative pathway C3 and C5 convertases, generated by C3 convertases in both pathways and also continuously generated in the circulation in the small amounts required to initiate the alternative pathway (tickover); it is inactivated by variable combinations of factor H, factor I, membrane cofactor protein, decay accelerating factor, and complement receptor 1. C3b is also an opsonin having receptors on erythrocytes, B lymphocytes, granulocytes, monocytes, and macrophages.
