buspirone Buspirone (Buspar) is considered by many as the drug of choice for treatment of generalized anxiety disorders. It differs from the benzodiazepines both structurally and pharmacologically and lacks many of their side effects. It acts by presynaptic binding to the serotonin receptor subclass (5-HT 1A ) within the hippocampus, neocortex and dorsal raphe and is classified as a "weak agonist" of 5-HT 1A . buspirone Buspirone is a 5-HT 1A receptor agonist used to treat anxiety disorders. Unlike benzodiazepines, buspirone has a low potential for abuse and withdrawal symptoms (43). Very few patients have been studied to determine the efficacy of buspirone for treating PTSD.
