bispecific a. antibody in which each of two antigen-binding sites is specific for separate antigenic determinants. It is an artificial antibody produced in the laboratory, formed by reassociating half molecules of two different antibody specificities to form a hybrid or bispecific antibody with antigen-binding sites of separate specificities. Called also hybrid a.

bisphosphoglycerate mutase [EC 5.4.2.4] an enzyme of the isomerase class that catalyzes the interconversion of 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate and 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate; it requires Mg2+ as a cofactor and is more active in the presence of 3-phosphoglycerate. The reaction produces 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate necessary for glucose catabolism and for erythrocytic regulation of hemoglobin oxygen affinity. Deficient enzyme activity, an autosomal recessive trait, results in a form of hemolytic anemia.

bisphosphoglycerate phosphatase [EC 3.1.3.13] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the hydrolysis of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate to form 3-phosphoglycerate. The reaction is one of the control mechanisms regulating the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen.
