| pro-opiomelanocortin | <chemical> A precursor protein, mw 30,000, synthesised mainly in the anterior pituitary gland but also found in the hypothalamus, brain, and several peripheral tissues. It incorporates the amino acid sequences of acth and beta-lipotropin. These two hormones, in turn, contain the biologically active peptides msh, corticotropin-like intermediate lobe peptide, alpha-lipotropin, endorphins, and methionine enkephalin.
