one of the two major classes of lymphocytes, B lymphocytes are white blood cells of the immune system that are derived from the bone marrow and spleen. B cells develop into plasma cells, which produce antibodies.

| B lymphocyte stimulatory f.’s |
a system of nomenclature for factors that stimulate B cells, replacing individual factor names (e.g., B cell differentiation factor). Each factor is designated by BSF and a number, BSF1, BSF2, etc., with the letter p prefixed to the number for factors that have not been purified or whose structure has not been identified. BSF1 is interleukin-4 and BSF2 is interleukin-6.
