The management and settlement of the estate of an intestate (a person who dies without a valid will) performed by the court through the appointment of an administrator. It involves collection of the decedent's assets, payment of debts and claims against the estate, payment of estate taxes and distribution of the remainder of the estate. If there is a will that names an executor, that person manages the settlement of the estate.
