A rapid and ineffective heart rhythm. An atrial flutter gives a characteristic flutter wave on an electrocardiogram (EKG, a diagnostic test used to record the electrical activity of the heart). An atrial flutter may occur with atrial fibrillation. Like atrial fibrillation, it also increases the risk of stroke.
