Sie sind neuroektodermalen Ursprungs und differenzieren sich im Rahmen der Zahnentwicklung aus dem inneren Schmelzepithel. Sie bilden nach Beginn der Dentinbildung durch die Odontoblasten den Zahnschmelz, der aus Hydroxylapatit besteht.
