| 설명 | 사람의 46개 염색체 중 제 21번 염색체의 수가 1개 더 많아지므로써 나타나는 병이다. 환자의 생김새가 마치 몽고 사람과 닮았다 하여 일명 몽고증(mongolism)이라고 하였으나 잘못된 이름이다. 이 병은 반드시 21번 염색체가 3개가 되는 경우이외에도 21번 염색체의 일부분이 다른 염색체의 일부분과 교환이 되는 translocation형 등의 다른 염색체이상에서도 볼 수가 있다. 발생 빈도는 출생아 700~1000명중 1명 꼴로 나타나며, 염색체 이상병 중에 가장 많은 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 병의 발생빈도는 산모의 출산연령과 밀접한 관계가 있어, 35세 이후가 되면 기하 급수적으로 이 질환자의 출산수가 증가한다. 일반적으로 이 질환에 있어서 약 3분의 1은 모친의 출산연령에 의존하지 않고, 나머지 약 3분의 2는 모친의 연령과 직접 관련이 있는 것으로 보고 있다. 진단은 특징적인 생김새, 즉 몽고 사람같이 눈꼬리가 위로 치켜져 있고 눈거풀이 두꺼우며 콧등이 낮은 특징적인 얼굴 모습, 또한 근육의 긴장도가 저하되고 젖을 빠는 힘과 울음 소리가 약하며 손바닥의 좌우를 가르는 한줄의 손금(원숭이와 같은 형태이다) 등의 특징적인 소견에 의해 보조진단을 하고 최종적으로 염색체 분석에 의해 확진을 한다. 이 다운증후군의 환자는 대개 지능이 저하되어 있고, 여러 가지 종류의 선천성 심장기형을 많이 동반하고 있다. |

| 설명 | 부분적 위절제술 또는 위빈창자연결술을 받은 환자에게서 음식을 먹은 후에 일어나는 증후군이다. 명치 부분의 팽만감과 압박감-구역-구토 등의 복부증상 외에 탈력감-현기증-발한-가슴띔 등 순환장애 증상이 따른다. 그런 증상은 섭취한 음식물이 위에서 작은창자로 추락하듯 배출됨으로써 음식물의 무게로 인해 소화관이 아래쪽으로 쳐져든다. 작은창자벽이 급격하게 늘어나든가, 화학적 자극으로 인한 작은창자벽의 자율신경반사, 작은창자벽의 삼투압에 의해 소화관으로 수분이 급속히 대량 이동하여 순환되는 혈액의 양이 감소하여 일어난다. 주로 식사요법으로 치료하여, 약물요법으로는 아트로핀-헥사메토늄-페노바르비탈-탄산수소나트륨의 사용 및 포도당주사도 효과가 있다. 수술요법은 빌로스(Billroth) 제1법으로의 변환, 대용위의 제작 등이 있으나 확실한 것은 아니다. |

| 설명 | 영유아나 소아가 부모 등의 보육자나 형제자매로부터 반복해서 신체적인 학대를 받아 발생하는 각종 증사의 총칭이다. 1962년 켐프(Kempe)에 의해 명명되었다. 상처를 받은 시기가 서로 차이가 있는 외상이 몸 전체 여러 곳에서 관찰되는 것이 특징이다. 피부의 손상과 얼룩출혈, 경질막하 혈종, 골절 등이 많고 극단적인 경우는 영구적 뇌손상과 죽음에 이르는 경우도 있다. 학대동기는 피해자 입장에서는 육체적-정신적 발육부전, 쌍둥이, 기형, 밤중에 우는 것, 야뇨증, 장난, 반항적 태도 등이 있으며 가해자 입장에서는 보육자의 아이에 대한 애정결핍과 과잉 기대, 육아에 대한 무지, 형제자매에 대한 시샘, 정신병, 신경증, 지능저하, 알코올 중독 등이 있고, 또 생활환경의 입장에서는 빈곤, 부부 불화, 핵가족이면서 사회적으로 고립된 가정 등을 들 수 있다. |

| 설명 | 중국 광동 지역에서 가장 먼저 발생한 전염성 호흡기 질환으로 세계보건기구(WHO)에서 ‘중증급성호흡증후군(SARS)'으로 명명했다. 섭씨 38도 이상의 고열과 기침, 호흡곤란, 저산소증, X선상의 폐렴증상 중 하나 이상의 증상이 나타나며, 두통, 근육통, 식욕부진, 피로감, 발진, 설사를 동반할 수 있다. 초기 증상은 감기와 비슷하지만 폐렴으로 발전하면 치명적일 수 있다. 현재 밝혀진 감염경로는 환자가 재채기나 기침할 때 내뿜는 침방울이고, 이것이 다른 사람의 호흡기로 들어갈 때 전염된다. 침방울이 전달되는 거리는 보통 1m로 보고 있다. 공기를 통해 전염이 가능하다는 주장이 제기됐지만 아직 확인되지 않았다. 원인균은 변종 코로나바이러스로 밝혀졌다. |

| arginase deficiency | <biochemistry> Arginase is the fifth enzyme of the urea cycle and catalyses the hydrolysis of arginine to ornithine and urea as the final step in the detoxification of ammonia. Deficiency of the enzyme results in hyperargininaemia and episodic hyperammonaemia, leading to moderate to severe mental retardation and spasticity. at least two isozymes of arginase exist in man. AI (the enzyme deficient in the disorder) is cytosolic and found primarily in liver and red blood cells, whereas AII is mitochondrial and found predominantly in kidney but also to a lesser extent in liver, brain, and other tissues. While AII activity appears to be induced in AI deficiency, it is only partially effective in maintaining urea cycle function. The normal in vivo function of AII is unclear. Arginase deficiency is diagnosed by observing high arginine concentrations on either qualitative or quantitative plasma or urine amino acid analysis. The diagnosis is confirmed by finding markedly decreased or absent arginase activity in an isotopic red blood cell enzymatic assay. | ascorbic acid deficiency | A condition due to a dietary deficiency of ascorbic acid (vitamin c), characterised by malaise, lethargy, and weakness. As the disease progresses, joints, muscles, and subcutaneous tissues may become the sites of haemorrhage. | calcium deficiency | A low blood calcium (hypocalcaemia) makes the nervous system highly irritable with tetany (spasms of the hands and feet, muscle cramps, abdominal cramps, overly active reflexes, etc.). Chronic calcium deficiency contributes to poor mineralization of bones, soft bones (osteomalacia) and osteoporosis; and, in children, rickets and impaired growth. Food sources of calcium include dairy foods, some leafy green vegetables such as broccoli and collards, canned salmon, clams, oysters, calcium-fortified foods, and tofu. | carbamoylphosphate synthetase deficiency | <biochemistry> Carbamoylphosphate synthetase is the initial enzyme of the urea cycle, catalysing the synthesis of carbamoylphosphate from ammonia, bicarbonate and ATP as the first step of ammonia detoxification. The enzyme is an intramitochondrial form called CPS I. A different isozyme found in the cytoplasm, called CPS II, is much less active and apparently not involved in the urea cycle. The deficiency state is autosomal recessive and presents in infancy with massive hyperammonaemia and neurologic deficits in survivors. Diagnosis is suggested by the blood biochemistry and confirmed by specific enzyme assay on liver or rectal biopsy. | magnesium deficiency | Can occur due to inadequate intake or impaired intestinal absorption of magnesium. Low magnesium (hypomagnesaemia) is often associated with low calcium (hypocalcaemia) and low potassium (hypokalaemia). Deficiency of magnesium causes increased irritability of the nervous system with tetany (spasms of the hands and feet, muscular twitching and cramps, spasm of the larynx, etc.). According to the national academy of sciences, the recommended dietary allowances of magnesium are 420 milligrams per day for men and 320 milligrams per day for women. | glucocerebrosidase deficiency | Causes Gaucher's disease (type 1), a progressive genetic disease due to an enzyme defect. The enzyme, glucocerebrosidase, is needed to break down the chemical glucocerebroside. The enzyme defect in persons with Gaucher's disease (GD) leads to the accumulation of glucocerebroside in the spleen, liver, and lymph nodes. The most common early sign is enlargement of the spleen (located in the upper left abdomen). Other signs include low red blood cell counts (anaemia), a decrease in blood clotting cells (platelets), increased pigmentation of the skin, and a yellow fatty spot on the white of the eye (a pinguecula). Severe bone involvement can lead to pain and collapse of the bone of the hips, shoulders, and spine. The GD gene is on chromosome 1. The disease is a recessive trait. Both parents carry a GD gene and transmit it for their child with the disease. The parents' risk of a child with the disease is 1 in 4 with each pregnancy. This type of Gaucher's disease (noncerebral juvenile Gaucher's disease) is most common in Ashkenazi Jews (of European origin) and is the most common genetic disease among Jews in the United States.
