A standardized set of rules and operating procedures originally developed by the Department of Defense to permit connection of a number of different data networks designed by different vendors into a "network of networks" (the "Internet"). TCP is responsible for verifying the correct delivery of data. It is responsible for moving packets of data through the network based on an address. TCP/IP is the fundamental method of Internet operation.
