A procedure for removing spinal fluid from the space that surrounds the spinal cord using a needle inserted through two vertebrae in the lower part of the back. Fluid samples drip out the needle when the obturator is removed and are collected in sterile tubes and examined for evidence of leukemia or lymphoma.
