a rare, usually bilateral, opacity shaped like a snowflake, affecting the anterior and posterior cortices of young diabetics. Sometimes it can be reversed when the blood glucose is brought under control, but in most cases it progresses rapidly to a mature cataract.

any of several cutaneous lesions, usually manifestations of diabetes mellitus, consisting of papular, ulcerated, pigmented, macular, or cicatricial lesions of the shins (shin spots); similar lesions may occur after trauma in nondiabetic patients. The cause is apparently a type of angiitis of small cutaneous blood vessels. The term is sometimes broadened to include bullae on the feet or ankles of diabetic patients or necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum. Called also diabetid.
