bone scan A small, harmless amount of radioactive chemical is injected into the body and taken-up by the bones. An image can then be created with cancerous tissue showing up as black spots "hotspots" on the X-ray film. However, not all hotspots are caused by cancer and you may find some old breaks or previous injuries showing up.
