As a verb the act of creating and storing a duplicate copy of important information. This duplicate is archived so that it can be restored in the event of calamitous loss of the original data. As a noun a backup is the duplicate copy thus made. Numerous backups of this thesis were hastily made following a fire in the author's apartment building.
