Another name for Nuclear Energy. (See also Nucleosynthesis) The energy released when the nuclei of two atoms are fused together (nuclear fusion). In the case of the Sun, this energy makes its way outwards from the center (core) of the Sun and is released into space in the form of heat and light.

This term generally refers to something that cannot be broken into smaller parts. In COBOL, atomic variables are given pictures. They cannot be reduced to smaller parts. Arrays and structures are not atomic because they are composed of smaller data types. Atomic is the opposite of aggregate when applied to data types. In the following code fragment, SOME-VALUES is an aggregate, and VALUE-1 and VALUE-2 are atomic:

The smallest part of a substance which can exist and still retain the properties of the substance. All familiar matter consists of atoms. An atom consists of a positively charged nucleus and orbiting electrons. The simplest atom is hydrogen (one proton and one electron), and the largest atom in nature is uranium (92 protons, 92 electrons, and 146 neutrons).
