| thyroid-stimulating hormone t. |
a thyroid function test in which thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone) is administered intramuscularly and the thyroid gland is monitored over time with scintiscanning or radioimmunoassays for a response or areas of decreased responsiveness. The test was formerly also much used for determining whether hypothyroidism was caused by thyroid gland failure or by deficiency in thyrotropin. Called also TSH t. and TSH stimulation t.

| thyroid-stimulating i.’s |
circulating IgG antibodies with the ability to mimic thyrotropin by binding to receptors for it on thyroid cells and activating adenylate cyclase, thus causing an increase in the level of the intracellular second messenger cyclic AMP, which results in the release of thyroid hormones; thought to be responsible for most cases of Graves' disease. Called also human thyroid adenylate cyclase stimulators (HTACS). Formerly called long-acting thyroid stimulator.
