Merkel c. a specialized cell at or near the epithelial–dermal junction, characterized by numerous membrane-bound granules with dense cores, some desmosomes, cytoplasmic microfilaments, intranuclear filaments bundled in parallel to form rodlets, and spikelike processes that interdigitate with keratinocytes. They are believed to act as touch receptors by association with flat, disklike endings of nerve fibers (tactile menisci).
