iodide peroxidase [EC 1.11.1.8] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes a series of reactions occurring in the synthesis of thyroxine; it catalyzes the oxidation of iodide to iodine, the iodination of tyrosyl residues of thyroglobulins, and the intramolecular condensation of such iodinated residues to form iodothyronines. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive disorder, results in congenital goiter. Called also thyroid peroxidase and thyroperoxidase.
