aphthous stomatitis A type of benign mouth ulcer often caused by injury to the mucosal lining of the oral cavity, viral infection or vitamin deficiency. Inflammation of the oral mucosa, due to local or systemic factors may involve the buccal and labial mucosa, palate, tongue, floor of the mouth and the gingivae.

apheresis A procedure where whole blood is removed from the body and a desired component is retained, while the remainder of the blood is returned to the donor.

apheresis A special blood donation procedure in which plasma or selected cellular elements, such as platelets or white cells, are separated from the other parts of the blood and retained. Blood is drawn and processed through a cell separator, and the other cells and plasma are returned to the body. Apheresis takes approximately two hours compared with a whole blood donation of about eight to ten minutes.
