transient or intermittent ischemia of the brain stem and cerebellum due to stenosis, thrombosis, or other obstruction of the vertebral or basilar artery; this results in attacks of such symptoms as vertigo, diplopia, nystagmus, muscle weakness, and dysarthria. A more severe syndrome also exists, consisting of paralysis, coma, and death. Cf. subclavian steal. Called also basilar i., basilar artery syndrome, and vertebrobasilar ischemia or syndrome.
