| SLL | segment length, lateral |
|---|---|
| VLG | ventral nucleus of the lateral geniculate body |
| LSCC | lateral semicircular canal |
| lateral part of vaginal fornix | lateral part of vaginal fornix |

| lateral patellar retinaculum | Part of the aponeurosis of the vastus lateralis muscle passing lateral to the patella to attach to the tibial tuberosity. Synonym: retinaculum patellae laterale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral pectoral nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A nerve that arises from the lateral cord of the brachial plexus usually passing medial to pectoralis minor to supply the sternoclavicular head of pectoralis major. Synonym: nervus pectoralis lateralis, lateral anterior thoracic nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral pericardiac lymph nodes | Small lymph nodes located along the pericardiacophrenic vessels, they drain the pericardium. Synonym: nodi lymphatici pericardiales laterales. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral periodontal abscess | An abscess that forms at the depth of a periodontal pocket due to multiplication of pyogenic microorganisms or the presence of foreign material. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral periodontal cyst | An intraosseous cyst, usually encountered in the cuspid-premolar region of the mandible, derived from the remnants of the dental lamina and representing the intraosseous counterpart of the gingival cyst. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral pharyngeal space | That part of the peripharyngeum spatium located at the sides of the pharynx. Synonym: spatium lateropharyngeum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral plantar artery | <anatomy, artery> Larger of the two terminal branches of the posterior tibial; distribution, forms the plantar arch and through it supplies the sole of the foot and plantar surfaces of the toes; anastomoses, medial plantar, dorsalis pedis. Synonym: arteria plantaris lateralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral plantar nerve | <anatomy, nerve> One of the two terminal branches of the tibial nerve; it courses along the lateral side of the sole, dividing into superficial and deep branches; it supplies the skin of the lateral aspect of the sole and the lateral one and one-half toes; it innervates the intrinsic muscles of the plantar part of the foot with the exception of the abductor hallucis and the flexor digitorum brevis; its distribution in the foot is very similar to that of the ulnar nerve in the hand. Synonym: nervus plantaris lateralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral plate | A nonsegmented mass of mesoderm on the lateral periphery of the embryonic disk. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral plate mesoderm | The peripheral thinned-out portion of intraembryonic mesoderm which is continuous with the extraembryonic mesoderm beyond the margins of the embryonic disk; in it develops the intraembryonic celom. Synonym: lateral mesoderm. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral plate of pterygoid process | The larger and more lateral of the two bony plates extending downward from the point of union of the body and greater wing of the sphenoid bone on either side; forms medial wall of intfratemporal fossa and gives origin to pterygoi muscles. Synonym: lamina lateralis processus pterygoidei, lateral plate of pterygoid process. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral pole | The rounded lateral end of the ovary, usually directed toward the infundibulum of the uterine tube. Synonym: extremitas tubaria ovarii, lateral pole. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral popliteal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> One of the terminal divisions of the sciatic nerve, diverging from the tibial nerve at the upper end of the popliteal fossa, then coursing with the biceps tendon along the lateral portion of the popliteal space to wind around the neck of the fibula where it divides into the superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The common peroneal nerve, or its deep branch, is the most commonly injured nerve, being located in a lateral subcutaneous position at the fibular neck; a lesion causes a loss of ability to dorsiflex the foot ("foot drop"). Synonym: nervus fibularis communis, nervus peroneus communis, common fibular nerve, lateral popliteal nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral preoptic nucleus | A vaguely defined group of nerve cells in the lateral zone of the preoptic region. Synonym: nucleus preopticus lateralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
