Leukocyte with conspicuous cytoplasmic granules. In humans the granulocytes are also classified as polymorphonuclear leucocytes and are subdivided according to the staining properties of the granules into eosinophils, basophils and neutrophils. Plays important role in antimicrobial defense and modulate allergic and inflammatory responses.
