| granulosa cell | A cell of the membrana granulosa lining the vesicular ovarian follicle that becomes a luteal cell of the corpus luteum after ovulation. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| granulosa cell tumour | An ovarian tumour originating in the cells of the primordial membrana granulosa of the graafian follicle. It may be associated with excessive production of estrin, inducing endometrial hyperplasia with menorrhagia. It can be benign or malignant. It is soft, solid, white or yellow, and consists of small round cells sometimes enclosing call-exner bodies. Larger lipid-containing cells may be present. Granulosa cell tumours are seen in women of all ages. Treatment depends on the age of the patient and the extent of the disease. (12 Dec 1998) |
| chief cell | The predominant cell type of a gland. (05 Mar 2000) |
| chief cell of corpus pineale | A cell of the pineal body with long processes ending in bulbous expansions. Pinealocytes receive a direct innervation from sympathetic neurons that form recognizable synapses. The club-shaped endings of pinealocyte processes terminate in perivascular spaces surrounding capillaries. Synonym: chief cell of corpus pineale, parenchymatous cell of corpus pineale. Origin: pineal + G. Kytos, cell (05 Mar 2000) |
| chief cell of parathyroid gland | A round clear cell with a centrally located nucleus; secretes parathyroid hormone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| chief cell of stomach | <pathology> Cells of the basal part of the gastric glands of the stomach. They contain extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum and zymogen granules and secrete pepsinogen, the inactive precursor of pepsin and rennin. (18 Nov 1997) |
| peripheral blood stem cell transplantation | A procedure that is similar to bone marrow transplantation. Doctors remove healthy immature cells (stem cells) from a patient's blood and store them before the patient receives high-dose chemotherapy and possibly radiation therapy to destroy the leukaemia cells. The stem cells are then returned to the patient, where they can produce new blood cells to replace cells destroyed by the treatment. (12 Dec 1998) |
| chinese hamster ovary cell | <cell culture> Cells from the ovaries of Chinese hamsters that are used to grow viruses, including the ones from the family Herpesviridae. (05 Jan 1998) |
| peripolar cell | A granular cell located where the parietal and visceral capsules of the renal corpuscle meet; part of the cell faces the filtration space of Bowman. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mesothelial cell | One of the flat cell's of mesenchymal origin that form the superficial layer of the serosal membranes lining the body cavities of the abdomen and thorax. (05 Mar 2000) |
| perithelial cell | <pathology> Cell associated with the walls of small blood vessels: not a smooth muscle cell, nor an endothelial cell. (18 Nov 1997) |
| Rieder cell leukaemia | A special form of acute granulocytic leukaemia in which the affected tissues and the circulating blood contain relatively large numbers of atypical myeloblasts (i.e., Rieder cells) that have the usual, faintly granular, immature type of cytoplasm, and a bizarre, comparatively mature nucleus with several wide and deep indentations (suggestive of lobulation). (05 Mar 2000) |
| permissive cell | <cell biology> Cells of a type or species in which a particular virus can complete its replication cycle. (18 Nov 1997) |
| CHO cell | Established line of fibroblasts from Chinese Hamster Ovary. (18 Nov 1997) |
| pessary cell | A red blood cell in which the haemoglobin has disappeared from the centre, leaving only the periphery visible. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cell body |
The portion of the neuron containing genetic material and cellular organelles.
