birth rate The number of live births per 1,000 population in a given year. Also known as the Crude Birth Rate [CBR]. India's CBR was 25.4 in the year 2001 (Census 2001). Assuming linear growth or decline, the population at mid year is also the average population for the year. So CBR is B/PX 1000, where 'B' is live births and 'P' is the population for the given year.
