| amniocentesis |
Procedure involving withdrawal of amniotic fluid, the fluid that surrounds the growing fetus in the uterus, generally performed between the 15th-20th week of pregnancy by inserting a needle through the abdominal wall into the uterus. Cells that are contained in the fluid can be isolated and used for prenatal diagnosis of gender and for particular genetic conditions (including MPS/ML).

| amniocentesis |
Transabdominal puncture of the amniotic sac under ultrasound guidance using a needle and syringe in order to remove amniotic fluid. The sample obtained is studied chemically and cytologically to detect genetic and biochemical disorders and maternal-fetal blood incompatibility and, later in the pregnancy, to determine fetal maturity. The procedure can cause abortion or trauma to the fetus.
