(bag of water)- membranous sac containing amniotic fluid which surrounds the fetus in utero. When the sac breaks, there will be a leak or a gush of amniotic fluid; synonymous with "ruptured membranes" or "water breaking."

Procedure involving withdrawal of amniotic fluid, the fluid that surrounds the growing fetus in the uterus, generally performed between the 15th-20th week of pregnancy by inserting a needle through the abdominal wall into the uterus. Cells that are contained in the fluid can be isolated and used for prenatal diagnosis of gender and for particular genetic conditions (including MPS/ML).
