epidermal growth factor <growth factor> A mitogenic polypeptide initially isolated from male mouse submaxillary gland.
The name refers to the early bioassay, but epidermal growth factor is active on a variety of cell types, especially but not exclusively epithelial. Human equivalent originally named urogastrone owing to its hormone activity.
Acronym: EGF
(18 Nov 1997)
epidermal growth factor receptor protein-tyrosine kinase <enzyme> The catalytic protein-tyrosine kinase domain found on the cytoplasmic beta-portion of epidermal growth factor receptor.
Registry number: EC 2.7.1.-
(12 Dec 1998)
epidermal growth factor-urogastrone <chemical> Single chain, nonhelical, acidic polypeptides of about 52 amino acids found in most mammals. Epidermal growth factor and urogastrone are not identical but seem to share biological acivities. They promote growth of, and cell proliferation in, certain tissues, especially epidermal structures and inhibit acid secretion by the stomach. They have been used to treat gastrointestinal ulcers.
Chemical name: Epidermal growth factor
(12 Dec 1998)
erythrocyte maturation factor <biochemistry> Member of the water soluble B vitamin group, important in the proper function of the nervous system and important in proper carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism.
(27 Sep 1997)
TSH releasing factor <endocrinology> A tripeptide produced by the hypothalamus that stimulates the anterior pituitary to release TSH.
(18 Nov 1997)
tumor necrosis factor <cytokine> Originally described as a tumour inhibiting factor in the blood of animals exposed to bacterial lipopolysaccharide or Bacille Calmette-Guerin.
Preferentially kills tumour cells in vivo and in vitro, causes necrosis of certain transplanted tumours in mice and inhibits experimental metastases. Human Tumour Necrosis factor alpha is a protein of 157 amino acids and has a wide range of pro inflammatory actions. Usually considered a cytokine.
Synonym: cachectin.
Acronym: TNF
(13 Nov 1997)
tumour angiogenesis factor <growth factor> Substance released from a tumour that promotes vascularisation of the mass of neoplastic cells. Once a tumour becomes vascularised, it will grow more rapidly and is more likely to metastasise. TAF is almost certainly more than one substance.
See: angiogenin.
(18 Nov 1997)
tumour angiogenic factor A substance released by solid tumours which induces formation of new blood vessels to supply the tumour.
(05 Mar 2000)
tumour necrosis factor <cytokine> Originally described as a tumour inhibiting factor in the blood of animals exposed to bacterial lipopolysaccharide or Bacille Calmette-Guerin.
(13 Nov 1997)
tumour necrosis factor-beta <cytokine> A cytolytic factor that is produced by CD4 and CD8 T-cells after their exposure to an antigen.
(05 Mar 2000)
extinction factor <microscopy> In a polarizing or Differential Interference Contrast microscope, the ratio of the amount of light that is transmitted with the axes of the polars parallel over the amount transmitted with their axes crossed.
Unless the lenses are rectified, the extinction factor drops exponentially as the numerical aperture is increased.
Acronym: EF
(26 Mar 1998)
extrinsic factor Dietary vitamin B12.
(05 Mar 2000)
extrinsic factor deficiency <disease> An inherited disorder that causes abnormal blood clotting due to the congenital absence of one of the 20 different plasma proteins involved in the coagulation process.
Symptoms include bleeding of the gums, nosebleeds, easy bruising, bleeding in muscles or joints and excessive menstrual bleeding.
Treatment includes the administration of plasma concentrates of factor VII (extrinsic factor).
(27 Sep 1997)
factor <pharmacology> Any of several substances or activities that are necessary to produce a result, for example a coagulation factor.
Often, use of the term factor indicates that the chemical nature of the substance or its mechanism of action is unknown, as in endocrinology, where factors are renamed as hormones when their chemical nature is determined.
(18 Nov 1997)
factor 3 Operational name given to an incompletely characterised selenium-containing natural product which, in minute amounts, prevents liver damage in rats due to deficiency of vitamin E, factor III in the vitamin B12 series, 5-hydroxybenzimidazole, analogue of the usual B12 nucleotide components.
