Uses a sealed vessel containing a coiled copper wire surrounded by oil. The instrument generates a small current that causes the protons within the oil to spin in the direction of magnetic north. The protons then generate a small signal, which is sent to the collection part of the device via the coiled wire. By measuring the signal intensity and comparing it to a known atomic constant
