A membrane protein that allows the passive flow of ions across a cell membrane. Ion channels are usually selective for a specific ion type (eg Na, or K, or Cl, or Ca) and or either open or closed. These are two structural states of the protein and the change from the open to the closed state (gating) is regulated by the cell.
