[EC 2.7.7.7] any of the enzymes of the transferase class that catalyze the template-directed, step-by-step addition of deoxyribonucleotides to the 3′ end of an RNA primer or growing DNA chain, using a single-stranded DNA template. The reaction is important in the replication and repair of deoxyribonucleic acids. Called also DNA polymerase.
