cm Closing Mode. A method used in Line-Transect surveys in which a sighting vessel approaches the sighted whales to verify further information such as the number of whales in a school. In the IWC/IDCR program, it was found that the total estimated stock population given by the CM was about 25% smaller in value than that given by the PM. Both the CM and the PM are now used in combination in the IWC sightings survey programs.
