| SMABF | superior mesenteric artery blood flow |
| SMAE | superior mesenteric artery embolism |
| SMAO | superior mesenteric artery occlusion |
| superior border of suprarenal gland | The border of the suprarenal gland at the superior junction of the anterior and posterior surfaces. Synonym: margo superior glandulae suprarenalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| superior branch | Branch which is directed upward or cranially or which is highly-placed, usually in contrast to an inferior branch. Synonym: ramus superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior branch of the oculomotor nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Branch of oculomotor nerve supplying the superior rectus and levator palpebrae superioris muscles. Synonym: ramus superior nervi oculomotorii. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior branch of the pubic bone | A bar of bone, triangular in section, which extends posterosuperiorly from the body of the pubis to form the superior boundary of the obturator foramen; developmentally, it contributes about one-fifth of the articular surface of the acetabulum. Synonym: ramus superior ossis pubis, superior branch of the pubic bone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior branch of the right and left inferior pulmonary veins | Tributaries of the right and left inferior pulmonary veins which receive oxygenated blood from the superior [S6] bronchopulmonary segments of the inferior lobes of the right and left lungs. Synonym: ramus superior venae pulmonalis dextrae/sinistrae inferioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior branch of the transverse cervical nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Branch providing cutaneous innervation in upper part of anterior triangle of neck. Synonym: ramus superior nervi transversalis cervicalis (colli). (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior bursa of biceps femoris | A bursa frequently found between the tendon of the long head of the biceps femoris and the ischial tuberosity and the tendon of the semimembranosus. Synonym: bursa musculi bicipitis femoris superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior carotid triangle | A space bounded by the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle, anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid, and posterior belly of the digastric; it contains the bifurcation of the common carotid artery. Synonym: trigonum caroticum, fossa carotica, Gerdy's hyoid fossa, Malgaigne's fossa, Malgaigne's triangle, superior carotid triangle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior central tegmental nucleus | Collections of small neurons centrally scattered among many fibres from the level of the trochlear nucleus in the midbrain to the hypoglossal area in the medulla oblongata. (12 Dec 1998) |
| superior cerebellar artery | <anatomy, artery> Origin, basilar; distribution, upper surface of cerebellum, colliculi, and most of the cerebellar nuclei; anastomoses, posterior inferior cerebellar. Synonym: arteria cerebelli superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior cerebellar artery syndrome | <syndrome> Syndrome due to thrombosis of the superior cerebellar artery which supplies the spinothalamic tract and the superior cerebellar peduncle; there is incoordination in performing skilled movements, with loss of pain and temperature senses on the side of the face and body opposite to that of the lesion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior cerebellar peduncle | A large bundle of nerve fibres that originate from the dentate and interpositus nuclei and emerges from the cerebellum in the rostral direction, along the lateral wall of the fourth ventricle. The bundle submerges from the dorsal surface of the brainstem into the mesencephalic tegmentum, where all of its fibres cross in the massive decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncles. Part of the bundle terminates in the contralateral red nucleus; the bulk of the fibres continue rostrally to parts of the ventral intermediate nucleus of thalamus, ventral posterolateral nucleus of thalamus, and central lateral nucleus of thalamus. Synonym: pedunculus cerebellaris superior, brachium conjunctivum cerebelli. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior cerebral veins | Numerous (8 to 10) veins that drain the dorsal convexity of the cortical hemisphere and empty into the superior sagittal sinus, curving rostrally in passing through the subdural space so as to enter the sinus at an acute forward angle. Synonym: venae cerebri superiores. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior cervical cardiac branches of vagus nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Uppermost of the branches of vagus nerve conducting presynaptic parasympathetic fibres to, and reflex afferent fibres from, the cardiac plexus; branching from the vagi close to the base of the skull. Synonym: rami cardiaci cervicales superiores nervi vagi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior cervical cardiac nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The uppermost of the cardiopulmonary splanchnic nerves which arises from the lower part of the superior cervical ganglion and passes down to form, with branches of the vagus, the cardiac plexus. Synonym: nervus cardiacus cervicalis superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
