septic arthritis usually caused by bacterial infections and can be a complication of rheumatoid arthritis. However, other types of arthritis may also predispose the individual to septic arthritis. Symptoms may include acute pain and swelling, usually affecting only a single joint, although several joints may be affected simultaneously. Pneumonia or skin infection also characterise this condition. It generally affects more men than women.
